  • The Girl Can't Help It

    The Girl Can't Help It

    11/2/26

    Where: The Sekrit Theater
Time: Doors at 6:30, Movie at 7:30

When small-time press agent Tom Miller is hired to turn a gangster’s glamorous girlfriend into a singing star, he quickly discovers she may have other plans. Packed with dazzling color, comedy, and performances by some of rock ’n’ roll’s biggest early stars, The Girl Can’t Help It captures the excitement—and absurdity—of the music industry at the dawn of the rock era.

    Listen For:
A spectacular snapshot of early rock ’n’ roll, featuring Little Richard, Fats Domino, Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, Eddie Cochran, The Platters, Julie London, The Treniers, and Little Richard’s band, The Upsetters, among others.

A Note for Modern Viewers:The Girl Can’t Help It plays 1950s ideas about sex, celebrity, and femininity at an intentionally exaggerated, almost cartoonish level. Some of its humor and attitudes toward women can feel dated today. Rather than ignoring that discomfort, watch for how the film exaggerates these stereotypes—and consider whether it is simply participating in them or making fun of them.

  • The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

    12/7/26

    Where: The Sekrit Theater
Time: Doors at 6:30, Movie at 7:00

As the Civil War rages across the American West, three ruthless gunslingers race to find a fortune in buried Confederate gold. Their paths cross and collide through betrayals, uneasy alliances, and one unforgettable showdown in Sergio Leone’s epic reinvention of the Western.

    Listen For:
Ennio Morricone’s legendary score is as important to the film as its images. Listen for the instantly recognizable two-note main theme, the different sounds Morricone assigns to the three central characters, and “The Ecstasy of Gold,” which builds music, editing, and movement into one of cinema’s most celebrated sequences.

A Content Note: Rated R in later classifications for Western violence. The film contains gunfights, killings, beatings, and Civil War battlefield violence, but little of the sexual content or strong language often associated with a modern R rating.
